The short answer: Webflow shines for a design brochure site, built quickly by a marketing team, rented. Wagtail wins when the site must last, be multilingual, integrate with your business tools and belong to you. The Webflow prices quoted were checked on webflow.com/pricing on 31 August 2026.
What Webflow does very well
Webflow reconciled designers with the web: near-total visual freedom without writing code, polished animations, integrated and fast hosting, and instant publishing. For a marketing team that wants to iterate quickly on a brochure site or landing pages, it is a very good tool, and the result can be beautiful. If your need stops there, Webflow fills that role perfectly.
What Webflow costs
Checked on webflow.com/pricing on 31 August 2026: a free plan to start, then a simple site without CMS from $15 per month per site billed yearly ($25 billed monthly). Plans with the CMS sit above, editing seats are billed on top ($39 per month per full seat billed yearly), and the ecommerce tiers run from $29 to $212 per month. Prices displayed in US dollars, before taxes.
Like any platform, it is rent: the site runs as long as the subscription does, and the total depends on the number of sites, seats and options. Webflow allows exporting a site's static code; CMS content exports as files, but the dynamic site does not rebuild as-is elsewhere.
The comparison, criterion by criterion
| Criterion | Webflow | Wagtail |
|---|---|---|
| Philosophy | Rented visual platform | Open source CMS, code you own |
| Cost | Subscription per site + seats + options | Initial investment, then classic hosting |
| Design | Visual freedom, inside the editor | Total freedom, designed then custom-built |
| Day-to-day editing | Visual editor, paid seats | Dedicated editing interface, unlimited users |
| Multilingual | Paid add-on (Localize) | Native, designed into the architecture |
| Business integrations | Via third-party services | Free development: CRM, portals, business software |
| Reversibility | Partial static export | Total: the code and data are yours |
| For whom | Marketing teams, design brochure sites | Organisations whose site is a lasting tool |
Where Wagtail takes the lead
Wagtail is the open source CMS built on Django used by Google, NASA and more than 60 French government websites. The fundamental difference with Webflow comes down to ownership: a Wagtail site is an asset you own, hostable wherever you want, extensible without platform limits, with as many editors as needed and no seat counter. It is the choice we have defended since 2015: our full assessment is in ten years of Wagtail, and our practice is detailed on our Wagtail agency page.
Choose Webflow if...
- Your marketing team wants to build and edit a design brochure site itself.
- You iterate fast: landing pages, campaigns, tests.
- The rental model does not bother you at your project's scale.
Choose Wagtail if...
- The site must last for years and evolve with your organisation.
- Multilingual content, business integrations or truly specific templates are on the menu.
- Owning the code is a requirement, for you or for your clients.
- Several people edit the site without every seat being billed.
The questions we get asked
Can you leave Webflow easily? Partially: static code export exists, CMS content exports as files, but dynamic features do not rebuild as-is elsewhere. A platform exit is handled like a redesign, with a real migration method to preserve visibility.
Is Wagtail not oversized for an SME? No: it is a CMS, not a factory. The editing interface is precisely renowned for its simplicity. What changes is the way it is built: custom, by a team, with an initial investment. To situate budgets, see our article on prices.
And against WordPress? That is another match, which we covered in detail in Wagtail vs WordPress.
